From Mike’s Desk …
Isn’t it nice to feel a touch of spring in the air? There is something wonderfully enlivening about blue sky and sunshine after long weeks of gloomy grey, about the days getting longer and at least a little warmer, and about daffodils and friesias starting to appear.
I’ve been thinking this week that this would be a great time to celebrate Easter – we just live in the wrong hemisphere! But we can still use this season, where we are aware of the dawning of new life and hope, as a reminder that Jesus has risen from the dead to bring hope and life out of despair and darkness, and as a focus for celebration and worship. Mid-Winter Christmases have become popular over recent years; perhaps it’s time for an “Early-Spring Easter”, so that we don’t just focus on the wonder and promise of resurrection once a year.
However, I’ve decided that there is an advantage in celebrating Easter when we do, that is, in autumn, and heading into winter. This reminds us that our hope and faith are not based on seasons or circumstances. The good news of the Christian message is that whatever is going on in our lives or our world, Jesus is alive, and this changes everything. This is good news, whatever “season” we are in.
